Comfort and Winter Heat-Loss
As summer has past, most homeowners will start to prepare for the cooler weather ahead. Checking the furnace, cleaning the chimney, weatherstripping doors and topping up attic insulation levels are tasks traditionally done in the fall season. Once again, we must all reluctantly prepare for winter. The area homeowners tend to overlook the most are their windows. Most new and renovated homes have adequate levels of insulation in their attics and walls, however, one of the greatest areas of heat loss is through glass. Windows have a very low insulation value or "R factor". In fact, the average insulated wall is 4 to 5 times more resistant to heat loss than a standard thermolpane window. Even high efficiency "low E - argon gas filled" windows (about 60% better than a standard thermolpane window) are still well short of an insulated wall. There is a simple way to solve this problem. Moveable window insulation (energy efficient shades) can make your windows up to 200% more efficient. The result will be reduced energy consumption (lower heating bills), less drafts and greatly improved home comfort. There are many unique styles of insulated window coverings available. The two most common are "cellular" and "quilted" shades. They work on the same principle as a down jacket or thermal underwear. Both products create pockets of trapped air, which act as an insulator. Quilted shades tend to take up more room than cellular shades when retracted and completely stacked. Cellular shades are available in light filtering and blackout styles. They can operate from the top down or bottom up and will compact to 3% of their original length when fully retracted. Other options include a selection of over 100 different colours, wall switch or remote control operation. Cellular shades are backed by a lifetime warranty. Quilted shades are also available in light filtering and room darkening styles. These insulated roller blinds run in special side tracks, sealing off the perimeter of the fabric. Quilted shades are available in pull cord or motorised versions and are backed by a 3 year warranty. To stop winter heat loss, consider retractable energy efficient window coverings. Besides creating a more comfortable home, you will also be helping the environment by consuming less energy. Credits: Written by Ed Bonisch, Brading Specialty Shades.
